ABOUT THE PROHILL GROUP

Hill farming is crucial to the economy, culture and society of rural Wales, to sustain these rural areas, the Prohill group of progressive hill ram breeders are working to strengthen the Welsh sheep sector.

With the help of the HCC Red Meat Development Programmes’ Welsh Hill Ram Scheme, ProHill are improving the genetic merit of their flocks, producing lambs that meet market requirements from extensive, forage-based systems and breeding rams with known, improved performance.

To achieve this, they are utilising the latest technology available, including DNA shepherding, to select and breed from the best performing animals, producing stock with improved genetic potential to supply the UK hill farm sector.

Prohill rams are available at our annual sale held in Aberystwyth as well as directly from some of our breeders, contact us for more information.

Testimonials

""We have used performance recorded rams for the last 10 years over all of our ewes and are seeing significant improvements in all aspects of the flock. There is definitely a merit to using performance recorded breeding stock. 250 of our ewes are tupped annually by the performance recorded Welsh rams and lamb outside in April. The best ewe lambs are kept as replacements within the flock and they’re making top quality mothers, easy lambing with strong maternal instincts. The remainder are bred to terminal sires.

As well as their maternal performance, we are also seeing the added benefits the rams are bringing to finished lamb production on the farm. Our lambs are now killing out at 16kgs and hitting the R3L spec where we were only achieving O grade in the past.""
