"We have used performance-recorded rams on all our ewes for the past ten years, and we are seeing significant improvements in every aspect of our flock. There is certainly a benefit to using performance-recorded breeding stock. 250 of our ewes are put to performance-recorded Welsh rams annually, and they lamb outdoors in April. The best of the ewe lambs are retained as replacements within the flock; they prove to be top-quality mothers, lambing easily and possessing strong maternal instincts. The remainder are bred to terminal sires.
In addition to their maternal performance, we also find that the rams bring extra benefits regarding fat lamb production on the farm. Our lambs now reach a carcass weight of 16kg and meet the R3L specification, whereas in the past we were only achieving an O grade."
